Visit Avranches: the City of Manuscripts

Small town of about 10,000 inhabitants, nestled on a hill, Avranches seems to watch over the Mont St Michel. Because of its strategic position Avranches has a rich and hectic past. Founded more than 2000 years ago, capital of the Abrincates (people of Abers) whose name is at the origin of that of the city.

For more than a millennium, the bishops will be the most influential people in the city and it is Aubert who is at the origin of the creation of the first sanctuary dedicated to St Michel on Mount Tombe. This church becoming over the centuries the place of most visited pilgrimage of the West: Mont St Michel. It is these historical links that led to the filing of the Monastisc library in Avranches after the French Revolution.

Avranches is therefore rich of 2 museums:

- the Mont Saint-Michel manuscripts museum: the Scriptorial where you will discover the different phases of realization of a manuscript, it is a museum dedicated to writing, to the book with temporary exhibitions and animations.


- The museum of art and history to know the rich heritage of Avranchin since the Middle Ages. You will find collections of art and popular tradition, costumes and headdresses of the Avranchin. The visit ends with a visit to a room dedicated to the breakthrough of avranches during the 2nd world war.

As you wander through the city, you will stop in front of Le Doyenné with its facade adorned with a sundial. the Rue de Lille where at n ° 17, you will see a wooden house.
